The Abia Police Commissioner,
Mr Besan Gwana on Wednesday in Aba paraded 10 suspected armed robbers, seven
kidnappers, a thief and a fake lawyer.
Speaking to newsmen at the Federal Special
Anti-Robbery Squad Office at Ogbor Hill, Gwana said that the command recently
recorded some successes in crime fighting in Abia.
He said: “The police could not work
alone without the assistance of citizens who volunteered information to make
our work effective. People should be willing to give more information to the
police.
“One of the robbery suspects, a
male, arrested on June 9, at Ogbodi, Umuojima in Osisioma LGA, also confessed
to be a member of a cult group called “Jemarial.
“On June 13, four other robbery
suspects who robbed one Chinedu Igwealor and took away his laptop and money
were arrested at St. Michael’s road.
“The suspects who aged between 20
and 26 years have been charged to court while the other three suspects aged
between 31 and 41 years were arrested at Umuakpu, Ofeme in Umuahia North Local
council on June 24.
“A single barrel gun and some
substances suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from them.
“On June 29, two other suspects,
aged 21 and 22, were arrested at Umuada, Umuahia with a locally-made gun and
two cartridges.
“A Blackberry and Techno phones and
an HP laptop were also recovered from them.’’
Gwana said that the kidnappers who
were arrested by the police were, Chief Anayo Nwankwo, Iheonunekwu Iroegbu,
Ikedichukwu Anum who were nabbed in Akwukabi, Etche LGA of Rivers.
He said that one Agbai Agbai alias
“Onye Army,” a member of a gang which rob people with a Toyota Camry car with
number SSM 80 BZ was shot dead in a gun duel with police.
“On June 23, a kidnap kingpin, Kinsley
Ahuronye Ufomba alias “Chi-Boy” was arrested at Umuoyia village in Umuma LGA of
Rivers State.
“On July 1, Ogbonna Onyekachi alias
‘Nwa-30”, Chibuzor Nwankwo, and Uba Friday were arrested with their three
hostages released,’’Gwana said.
The commissioner gave the names of
the kidnapped victims released by the police as, Ukpai Ukairo, Aba-based
lawyer, Emby Emeri and Innocent Orji.
Gwana said that Mba Akachukwu, who
posed as a lawyer in a matter under investigation, was arrested with two
identity cards which identified him as member of Aba North Local Government
Task force and a litigation officer.
According to the CP, one Amadi Chidi
(29) was arrested on June 21, at Imo River with a red Q-link motorcycle which
he allegedly stole from where it was parked by the owner.
He said that some of the newly
arrested suspects who were yet to be charged to court would soon be arraigned
to answer for their crimes.
