The Abia state government has said that the decision to leave construction work sites by contractors handling its jobs was borne out of fear of the unknown.

He said the decision was not made by the government but the contractors who feared that a possible change in government could hurt their chances of getting paid.

The State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Bonny Iwuoha disclosed this on Friday in an interview with newsmen in Aba

Iwuoha said that contractors left the sites after hearing the purported disqualification of Dr Okezie Ikpeazu by an Abuja High Court presided over by Justice Okon Abang.

The Commissioner said “It could not have been the decision of the state government to have them leave. That is why we are asking them to return immediately or forfeit being paid”.

Meanwhile, Aba residents in separate interviews had complained about the desertion noting that its affects was turning their expectations and lives to an untoward direction.

The residents said that the desertion by the construction companies which had delayed the planned reconstruction of Faulks road was affecting their businesses negatively.

They said that since Ikpeazu flagged off reconstruction of the road which was given to SETRACO Construction Company and they have not seen the company on the road.

NAN reports that Ikpeazu flagged off the reconstruction of the failed road on Monday June 28, 2016 in a ceremony at which he promised to monitor the progress of work monthly.

However, the company which had the mandate to deliver the road in 16 months left the site the next day without doing any work on it.
