Eze Ishmael Nnakwu, the Traditional Ruler of Etiti Ohazu Autonomous Community in Abia State has called on Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to rebuild Obohia road to ease the sufferings of the residents.
Nnakwu made the call during an interview with our reporter in Aba on Monday.
He said that Obohia road owned by Abia state government passed through three local government areas of Aba South, Ugwunagbor and Ukwa East and is strategic to the people living in the state.
“It is a road that is very important and which helps farmers from rural areas to transport their commodities to Aba town for sales.
“But due to the deplorable condition of this road, most agricultural products found around the area are now sold at high costs because most farmers divert their products to Port Harcourt because of availability of access roads to Port Harcourt”.
“We have asked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu what is being done about Obohia road and he told us that a contractor said that the road reconstruction contract was awarded him by the NDDC.
“But since then we have neither heard from the NDDC nor from the contractor. What we are saying is that since the road belongs to Abia State government, if the NDDC and their contractor do not want to build the road, the state government should build it to save us much troubles” he said.
The Ohazuru Mee 1 of Etiti Ohazu said that the flooding of the road which had caused gullies had made the community a disaster zone requiring urgent attention.
He said that his community had been classified by the “federal ministry of health as people living in swampy area of Aba South” adding that their community is not a swampy area.
“But the condition of our roads without drainages and refuse here and there has made it look like a swampy area. We are living in a disaster area of Aba South Local Government Area.
“We suffer from lots of epidemics. I have made series of reports to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Abia State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) but to no avail.
“It made no impact. My community is usually submerged by floods at the slightest rain,” he said.
Nnakwu said that the condition of their roads had worsened by lack of Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) refuse buckets in the area to ease disposal of refuse by the residents.
He therefore called on governor Ikpeazu to either take over the rebuilding of Obohia road in Aba or use his powers to make NDDC deploy a contractor to the site immediately.
