The Aba Police Area Commander, ACP Peter Okpara, has called on policemen in the city to be professional in the discharge of their duties to enable the police fight crime successfully.
Okpara said this on Tuesday when the Aba Federated Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Aba. .
According to the area commander, the way some policemen handle cases assigned to them or discharged their duties has increased the challenges of policing in the city instead of reducing it.
He said that the Policemen should face the truth no matter how hard it was in any matter and not to look at faces when discharging their duties if the society must be lawful and orderly.
He noted that some policemen intimidated the people and cowed them into hatred for the police force, adding that such actions should not be allowed to continue in the interest of the force.
He blamed the harassment and intimidation of the populace by some policemen for the seeming aloofness the people feel about the police instead of helping them.
He stressed that only by protecting the citizens and their rights could stop the people from seeing the police as their enemies but as friends that they should assist.
Okpara therefore urged his men to be law-abiding, god-fearing and very professional in order to get the act of policing right with great results.
He advised them to also see themselves as ordinary citizens in service hence they would someday retire to become citizens with no police powers but who would need police’s help.
The Area Commander promised to work with the Aba Federated Chapel of the NUJ, noting that the work of the journalist in society was very important as the conscience of the society.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Chapel, Mr Eric Ugbor of Vanguard Newspapers said that the Chapel was at the Commander’s office to seek his cooperation to enable newsmen report the police properly.
Ugbor promised that the Chapel would do all its best to ensure that it reported the police responsibly to enable them sanitize the city of Aba and Abia state in general .
He expressed appreciation for Okpara for showing the desire to make the society better, stressing that since he assumed office in Aba some months ago, he had made some impact in the city.
He urged him to continue the good work he was doing and prayed God to give him the ability to do more.
