Don canvasses improvement of ABSUTH

Dr John Chikezie, the Head, Department of Medicine, Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, has urged the state government to take advantage of potential of ABSUTH and help it grow.

Chikezie begged the government not to allow the institution to die during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Aba on Tuesday.

The don said this in response to questions on how to improve the lot of the institution which has been battling to survive since many years now due to neglect.

He said the institution needed government's assistance to realize its potential.

 “We should not allow this institution to die because it is the hope of our people, the hope of the South East.

“And just like our governor has been able to draw out the best among artisans in Aba such that today we are talking about manufacturers, that is interesting. 

“All along nobody thought about them but the present government having thought of them, has made them to have a sense of relevance. 

“So that is also how it should be if we think of how to make ABSUTH great. Then we should start seeing its huge potentials that have not been tapped. 

"The manpower is there but what the people need is what can cascade performance”, he said.

Chikezie said that the ABSUTH has huge potentials for greatness and for becoming a centre for excellence in medical practice adding that government should see its potentials and leverage it.

He suggested a round table between the institution’s management and Abia state government in order to draw out the benefits of the teaching hospital.

He said that although Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s government had inherited much bottlenecks, it should ensure the improvement and development of what it had received from previous administrations.

Chikezie, however, revealed that ABSUTH instituted a lecture series recently to honour distinguished scholars in the field of medicine to encourage hard work, sacrifice, excellence and passion among students.
