The Eastern Progressive Movement, an NGO, on Tuesday urged the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) to conduct the Dec. 17, local government elections without favouring any candidate or party.
The Chairman, Mr Chinedu Duru, said in a statement made available to our reporter in Aba, the state’s business hub, that the association was in support of holding the local government elections, to move the state forward.
“This, we believe, will make the elected executives to be directly accountable to the people at the grassroots and ensure the independence of all tiers of government.
“This election must be held in accordance with the electoral guidelines and must be free, fair and credible too.’’
Duru also said that in line with the desire to take the nation out of recession, there was the need to act on development projects that would boost economic development in the country.
He decried the deplorable state of federal roads in the South-East and urged the government to immediately start work on roads in the zone.
He said that rehabilitating the roads would encourage economic revival through increased business activities that would lead to economic growth.
The chairman called for special attention to electricity generation and supply especially in business zones such as Aba, Onitsha and Nnewi.
He further demanded a revolutionary rural electrification project in the geo-political zone to expand the wealth-creation plan of the government.
