The Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service, Abia Command, Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Kalu Ikpe, has said the command was investigating a jailbreak attempt in Aba on Saturday.
Ikpe who spoke to newsmen in Aba on Sunday said that the service was “still carrying our preliminary investigation into the matter”.
A reliable source close to the service told our Correspondent that one inmate was feared dead, with many others injured at the Nigeria Correctional Service, Aba, on Saturday afternoon.
He said the jailbreak attempted by long serving inmates was put down after the men of the services applied force to quell the jailbreak attempt.
He said when the jailbreak attempt came to the knowledge of the service, its men shot at the culprits killing one and injuring many in an effort to thwart the jailbreak moves of the inmates.
The source who pleaded anonymity told our reporter that the inmates also inflicted injuries on some of the service’s arms guards who shot at the escaping inmates while trying to save their own lives.
“The the incident was surprising to everyone at the correctional facility because the inmates involved in the failed jailbreak were old inmates who have few years to go”, he said.
He said that it took the joint effort of prison’s arms guards and police reinforcement to prevent the determined prison break by the inmates.
Another source who witnessed the incident having been within the area during the incident said, the gunshots he heard around the place on Saturday was beyond what he had known from the service.
“It was about afternoon on Saturday when we started hearing gunshots and noise coming out from the prison.
"I actually went to Aba Central Police Station which shares fence with the prison to give something to someone when I saw two injured prison’s arms guards who were were rushed to be treated at the station’s Clinic.
"Later I saw some police officers moving towards the prison in unusual form.
“When I went closer, people who have shops near the prisons facility were all panicking following the gunshot because the gunshots were too many.
"When I reached there, I saw a prison vehicle moving some inmates out of the place who were screaming out of pains perhaps because they were the ones injured”, he said.
He said that four of the inmates that tried to escape the facility were severely injured having received bullet wounds.
Another source told our Correspondent that one of the severely injured inmates died on Sunday afternoon from bullet wounds he sustained during the jailbreak attempt.
